READERSHIP:
EDITORIAL CALENDAR
COVID changed how we live and work.
It also changed our editorial.
Today, more than ever before, relevance matters. The more relevant a magazine, the more it is read. It’s a simple equation.
When COVID struck, Mechanical Business was compelled to set aside its pre-planned editorial. After all, how could anything planned 12-16 months prior – the typical “editorial calendar” planning cycle – be relevant? Instead, we ushered in a new era of editorial thinking. One that set aside the decades old “12-month planner” and, instead, focussed on content relevant to the day and within context of the new normal.
The payoff was huge. Readership soared as we set about delivering daily MBizLink digital articles. With open rates averaging over 60%, our readers had spoken and we took notice.
So, for 2021 and beyond, we will continue providing 100% Plumbing, HVAC and Refrigeration content… but with a more timely, more relevant and more immediate twist.
Plumbing:
If it gets wet, we write about it! Every issue brings you columnists who are the best and brightest in the industry and features a wide range of topics covering every facet of commercial and residential plumbing … kitchen/bath trends, water heaters, pumps, boilers, valves, backflow, piping, DWV and more!

Featured columnist: Fred Bretzke
Backed by decades of hands-on field experience, Fred has parlayed his years as a contractor into the role of full-time pipe trades instructor with Calgary’s SAIT Polytechnic. He also keeps his hand active in the business world as the general manager of A&B Plumbing.
Special Issues of Note:
March/April: Special Editorial Focus on Plumbing
Sept/Oct: CIPHEX West (Vancouver) Show Guide Edition w/bonus advertising
Nov/Dec: Bath & Kitchen Trends Report

HVAC is a major part of every edition of Mechanical Business. In fact, 85% of our readers are active in commercial and/or residential HVAC. Our editorial covers an array of focussed articles, including timely coverage of furnaces, air conditioning, IAQ, HRVs/ERVs, chillers, heat pumps, venting, controls, diagnostics, humidification and more!

Featured columnist: Gord Cooke, P.Eng.
Gord is an award-winning and highly sought-after technical speaker and author in the world of HVAC and energy efficiency. He has spent 25+ years helping HVAC contractors and builders implement innovative technologies into high-performance buildings. He has particular expertise in IAQ and airflow management.
Special Issues of Note:
May/June: The Cooling Report
Sept/Oct: The Fall Heating Report + CIPHEX West Show Guide Edition w/bonus advertising
Nov/Dec: Controls & Troubleshooting Focus
Hydronics:
Hydronics is a specialty with Mechanical Business. World class writers, including the wit and knowledge of the likes of Dan Holohan and Ray Wohlfarth, have graced our pages, making Mechanical Business the “go to” magazine of choice for hydronic enthusiasts. Watch for features on boilers, circulators, tubing, manifolds, snow melt, controls and more!

Featured columnist: Bob “Hot Rod” Rohr
Bob has over 30 years of high-level expertise in plumbing, radiant and solar. He has received countless industry recognitions for his contributions, including the prestigious Carlson Holohan Award of Excellence. Bob is currently the manager of training and education with Caleffi North America.
Special Issues of Note:

The world of refrigeration speaks its own language – a language that Mechanical Business knows and fosters. Every issue features columnists who are the best and brightest in the Canadian marketplace. Look for comprehensive technical features on refrigerants, compressors, valving, controls, efficiency, supermarkets, food processing, cold storage and more!

Featured columnist: Phil Boudreau
Often referred to as the most recognized face in the refrigeration trade in Canada, Phil’s 30-year career has seen him work in refrigeration wholesale, and spend evenings teaching refrigeration at Humber College. He is currently the Ontario sales manager for Bitzer Canada. Phil’s technical articles are a must-read for anyone in refrigeration.
Special Issues of Note:
May/June: The Cooling Report
July/Aug: Refrigerant Trends
Sept/Oct: CIPHEX West (Vancouver) Show Guide Edition w/bonus advertising
Business:
The vast majority of Mechanical Business readers are the successful owners and managers of contracting businesses. But their path to success came through trade schools, not business schools. As such, the ‘soft’ skills of running a mechanical business – things like marketing, HR, accounting, benefits, finance and management – often aren’t second nature to them. Our editorial is helping change that.

Featured columnist: Doug MacMillan
Doug is the founder of The Letter M Marketing, a boutique MARCOM company in Ontario. While now widely diversified, many of Doug’s first clients were in the plumbing/hydronic and HVAC sectors. His keen understanding of the challenges of marketing technical products to consumers makes him a reader favourite.

Featured columnist: Roger Grochmal
Roger is the CEO of AtlasCare, one of Canada’s largest independent HVAC/R and plumbing contracting companies. Roger understands the technical issues facing contractors, but more importantly, he has spent a lifetime pursuing excellence in business. He is always keen to share his business knowledge with others.
